310806: The kash® VISA cards are nominated for The 2007 Design Award of The Federal Republic of Germany. The Design Award is the official recognition of excellence in design offered by the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the central thrust in the campaign of the Federal German Ministry of Economics and Technology to promote good design.Last year 25 out of 850 projects were awarded prizes by the jury. Among the prize winners last year were BMW 6 Series Cabriolet, Porsche 911 Carrera C2/C2S, Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 Sheet fed printing press!, Bogner bamboo skies and the magazine DU. Companies cannot enter for the Design Award; instead, they are nominated by the Ministries and Senators for Trade & Industry of the German States or by the Federal Ministry of Ecomics and Technology. It is a precondition for this, however, that a product has already been awarded a national or international prize. No other Design Award sets its entrants such a strict criterion. Because of this the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is called the "prize of prizes" by many opinion leaders in the world of design.

310806: I am happy to be a part of this excellent book project:Influences. A Lexicon of Contemporary Graphic Design is released by DGV
tomorrow, September 1st. Influences looks at who and what is influencing, provoking, inspiring and informing graphic designers’ working methods and research processes today. Two hundred of the best established and up-and-coming graphic designers around the world were asked about their influences. Their responses reveal the hidden catalysts that motivate and propel designers. The entries show the range of preparatory work and intensive research that forms the backbone of any creative project.

From Charles and Ray Eames to John Cage, teaching to yawning, money to plumbing, Braun Amplifier to the Brannock Devise, Frank Zappa to Ghandi, Gridnik to kidney stones, Charlie Chaplin to Kraftwerk – the designers’ collected answers show the influences driving contemporary graphic design practice.

Taking the form of a lexicon, this dictionary of graphic design influences and references is structured in two parts – the main part lists the responses from each designer shown alphabetically while an appendix at the end of the book includes the designers with references to their answers and biographies. The book gives detailed insight into the daily working processes of designers with short entertaining texts getting to the root of their passion and creative conviction.

Influences is created by Anja Lutz, a Berlin-based graphic designer, founder of the shift-platform and co-initiator of The Green Box and Anna Gerber, a London-based graphic designer and journalist currently teaching at Martins College of Art & Design and the London College and writing for magazines including Eye, Print and Idea.

INFLUENCES SHIFT! SPECIAL EDITION

“I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.”
Edward Munch

Traditionally, Norwegian artists have not had the courage to establish a close relation to Edward Munch. Instead of cultivating an expressionist tradition, founded by Edward Munch, and important to artists in other countries, Norwegian artists until lately let themselves be inspired and influenced…

210406: The book Art And Its Institutions, Edited by Nina Möntmann, for NIFCA/Black Dog Publishing is now in distribution. Design by Bodin. Art and its Institutions offers a powerful insight into the diversity of art institutions today, illuminating and analysing their relationship to artistic practice. The book includes discussions of: The advanced corporatisation of art institutions worldwide. The decline of the welfare state and its impact on art institutions across Europe. Forming and sustaining democratic art institutions that resist current political shifts. The role of the visitor or consumer in the contemporary art world.

210406: Several Ways Out 22. April – 21. May 2006. Opening 21rst of April at 7 p.m. at UKS. Artists: Ibon Aranberri (Bilbao), Julie Becker (Los Angeles), Marius Engh (Oslo), Terence Gower (New York), Gareth James (New York), Adriana Kuiper (Halifax) og Sean Snyder (Berlin) Curator: Craig Buckley (New York). Invitiation card and poster designed by Bodin.

Whether incorporated as a kind of Potemkin architecture, pictorialized as a backdrop for images, or as a quote pointing to the generalized boogeyman of modernism, one of the working hypotheses of this exhibition is that architectural tropes in contemporary artistic practice are over-freighted, to the point of exhaustion and cliché on the one hand, while being simultaneously under-scrutinized on the other. This exhibition brings together the work of several artists whose procedures address the field through deliberately indirect means. Taking on the materials, procedures, or documents related to architectural culture, their work transforms such points of departure often to the point of effacement. The process of effacement is less about masking than about drawing attention to cognitive work implied by translation. The exhibition will leave the relative opacity of these works standing, as a question particular to these artists’ processes and their own wagers. Within these layers of effacement, the exhibition looks to produce a space in order to put in question the cognitive affinities and dissonances relating these fields of work. Craig Buckley has recently curated the exhibition Adaptions at Apex Art, New York and Fredericianum Museum, Kassel. He has attended the curators-programme at Whitney School of Art, New York, and is presently a PhD candidate in History and Theory of Architecture at the School of Architecture, Princeton University

It was founded in 1979 by a group of young artists who wanted to present an alternative to what was shown by the city’s museums and commercial galleries at the time, which they felt to be too uniform. In the course of 25 years, W139 has developed from an anti-establishment laboratorium into a professional non-institutional platform for art. Today W139 operates parallel to, rather than in opposition with the more established venues. W139 provides ‘room for risk’, fulfilling a unique role in the Dutch art world.
